Cat registration

The Cat Act 2011 requires all cats (from 6 months of age) to be:

  • Microchipped
  • Sterilised
  • Registered with the relevant local government.

Cats are required to wear a collar and registration tag to ensure that owned cats can be easily identified and returned to their owner.

Register your cat.

Impounded cats

By law, the Shire must keep a cat for 72 hours (if the cat has no way of identifying an owner (ie. registration tag/microchip), and 7 days if the cat has an identified owner through registration and microchip details. If after this time the cat is not claimed it will be rehomed.

To release an impounded cat, the owner is required to pay an impound fee and may be liable for fines.

Unregistered cats will not be released until microchipped, registered and sterilised. (if unsterilised arrangements will be made between yourself, your vet and the pound Ranger to have a firm date for this to occur)

Cat number limits and breeding cats

If you own one or two cats, a permit is not required.

An application for a permit for three or more cats must be made to Shire of Mundaring by the occupier of the premises where the cats are to be kept.

If the occupier is not the owner of the property, written consent must be obtained from the owner.

A fee of $100 applies when submitting the application. Contact the Community Safety Rangers for more information.

How does this affect cat breeders?

Even if you wish to only breed one litter from your cat, you are considered a cat breeder.

If you are a current cat breeder or wish to become a breeder, you must apply for a permit from the Shire of Mundaring. These permits are valid for 12 months. A $100 fee is payable for every breeding female cat.

(note: The Shire of Mundarings Local Planning Scheme only allows for breeding to take place in certain areas, please contact the Shires Planning department for further information)

When a cat is sold or given away,  the cat must be registered, microchipped and sterilised before transfer.

If the cat cannot be sterilised due to its young age, you must provide a prepaid sterilisation voucher to the new owner.
