Shire of Mundaring has appointed award-winning architecture firm Cox Architecture (Cox) to design the Shire’s new Cultural Hub – a once-in-a-generation project set to transform the heart of Mundaring. Council members, including Shire President Paige McNeil, met today with Cox Director and lead designer Matthew Batchelor, ahead of the formal commencement of the project design.
Cox was appointed following a competitive tender process, standing out for its internationally recognised design excellence, deep experience in community focused projects and meaningful local connection. Leading the design is Cox Director and Darlington resident Matthew Batchelor, who brings both international architectural credentials and firsthand knowledge of the region. Shire President Paige McNeil said Batchelor’s connection to the area, combined with Cox’s community-centred design philosophy, made the firm an ideal partner for the project.
“This is a very exciting project for the Shire of Mundaring,” she said.
“The Mundaring Cultural Hub will foster community connection, showcase local artists, celebrate our rich history and attract tourism. We are excited to be working with Cox, whose design philosophy aligns with our vision for a connected, inclusive and vibrant town centre. Matthew’s understanding of our Hills environment and culture offers a uniquely local lens to the design.”
The Cultural Hub will serve as a contemporary, multi-use facility celebrating the region’s rich heritage culture and natural setting, while offering spaces for lifelong learning, artistic expression and community connection. Designed to be accessible and welcoming for all, the Hub will replace ageing facilities and provide flexible, future-ready spaces that support sustainable tourism, creative industries and community services.
Matthew Batchelor said the project was one that resonated deeply with the Cox team.
“Cox Architecture is very pleased to be successful in our submission for the design of the Mundaring Cultural Hub. This is a great opportunity to create a place that will support, foster and engage with the community and culture that is unique to the hills. We look forward to working with the Shire on this exciting project,” he said.
Cox brings to the project an extensive history of delivering award-winning cultural and community infrastructure across Australia and globally. The firm’s collaborative approach and strong stakeholder engagement will ensure the final design reflects the values and aspirations of the local community.
Funding for the Cultural Hub project has been secured through a $15 million grant from the Federal Thriving Suburbs Grant Program, with the remaining balance provided by Shire reserves and other smaller grants. The project is a key priority in the Shire of Mundaring’s strategic Council Plan to create attractive, welcoming and well-maintained places.
