Shire of Mundaring is celebrating a significant step forward in telecommunications resilience, with the Liberal and National Party Coalition announcing an election commitment of $1.2 million to support backup power generators for mobile phone towers in crisis situations.

Shire President Paige McNeil has been a tireless advocate for improved telecommunications in the Perth Hills, bringing community concerns to State and Federal leaders, including meetings in Canberra. The election commitment from the Federal opposition is a direct response to sustained advocacy efforts, recognising the critical need for reliable communications during natural disasters.

“This is a win-win for our Perth Hills communities and volunteer bushfire brigades who’ve waited too long for reliable emergency telecommunications that ultimately help to protect and save lives,” she said.

“Over the last 12 months, we’ve worked collaboratively with Telstra and our neighbours in the City of Kalamunda and Swan to find a practical and cost-effective solution. We extend our thanks to Liberal for Bullwinkel Matt Moran and Nationals Mia Davies for responding to our advocacy with a $1.2 million funding commitment to ensure our community have access to telecommunications during emergency events.”

The commitment was formally announced earlier today at the Parkerville Volunteer Bush Fire Brigade station by Deputy Leader of the Liberal Party, Sussan Ley MP, alongside Senator Linda Reynolds, Liberal candidate for Bullwinkel, Matt Moran and National Party candidate, Mia Davies. Representatives from Telstra, the City of Kalamunda, and the City of Swan were also on hand for the announcement.

Shire of Mundaring’s Telecommunications Resilience Initiative has been central to its advocacy agenda, with a funding request to support the deployment of mobile generators by our Volunteer Bushfire Brigades. The initiative aims to address the critical gap in emergency communications by ensuring power continuity at key telecommunications sites.

The announcement underscores the need for collaboration between Federal, State, and Local Governments to deliver practical solutions for emergency preparedness. The Shire will continue to work with all levels of government to ensure this commitment is delivered and that long-term solutions for telecommunications resilience remain a priority.
